Extended Ontologies: a Cognitively Inspired Approach

چکیده
Within the Knowledge representation community, in general, an ontology is considered as a formal specification of a shared conceptualization. In this sense, ontologies would be constituted of concepts and could be understood as an approach of representing knowledge. In general, ontologies represent concepts in a logical way, adopting the so-called classical theory of representation. Due to this, ontologies can support classification, based on necessary and sufficient conditions, and rule-based reasoning. In this work, we discuss a cognitively inspired approach for extending the knowledge representation capabilities of ontologies. We propose an extended notion of ontologies which incorporates other cognitively plausible representations, such as prototypes and exemplars. The extended ontology has the advantage of supporting similarity-based reasoning, besides the usual logical reasoning.

A Cognitively Inspired Approach for Knowledge Representation and Reasoning in Knowledge-Based Systems
In this thesis, I investigate a hybrid knowledge representation approach that combines classic knowledge representations, such as rules and ontologies, with other cognitively plausible representations, such as prototypes and exemplars. The resulting framework can combine the strengths of each approach of knowledge representation, avoiding their weaknesses. It can be used for developing knowledg...
متن کاملCognitive Character Engagement and the Extended Mind in Bahram Tavakkoli’s Wandering in the Fog
The present study has a cognitive approach to empathy and character engagement in cinema. In discussing how through empathy and engagement with real and fictional characters, we extend our minds and enhance our cognitive abilities, the present paper studies Bahram Tavakkoli’s Wandering in the Fog (2010), to show how Andy Clark and David Chalmers’s idea of the extended mind as joined with ...
متن کاملTypicality-Based Inference by Plugging Conceptual Spaces Into Ontologies
In this paper we present a cognitively inspired system for the representation of conceptual information in an ontology-based environment. It builds on the heterogeneous notion of concepts in Cognitive Science and on the so-called dual process theories of reasoning and rationality, and it provides a twofold view on the same artificial concept, combining a classical symbolic component (grounded o...
متن کاملFostering User Involvement in Ontology Alignment and Alignment Evaluation
The abundance of data at our disposal empowers data-driven applications and decisionmaking. The knowledge captured in the data, however, has not been utilized to fullpotential, as it is only accessible to human interpretation and data are distributed inheterogeneous repositories. Ontologies are a key technology unlocking the knowledge in the data by providingmeans to model the w...
متن کاملMERALI at SemEval-2017 Task 2 Subtask 1: a Cognitively Inspired approach
In this paper we report on the participation of the MERALI system to the SemEval Task 2 Subtask 1. The MERALI system approaches conceptual similarity through a simple, cognitively inspired, heuristics; it builds on a linguistic resource, the TTCSE , that relies on BabelNet, NASARI and ConceptNet. The linguistic resource in fact contains a novel mixture of common-sense and encyclopedic knowledge...
